About Ed

Ed Rosenthal is recognized worldwide as the leading authority on marijuana. For the last 35 years he has worked as a cultivation expert, researcher, writer, teacher and activist. His volume of works covers marijuana gardening, law, social policy and culture. They have cumulatively sold over two million copies worldwide. Rosenthal is a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) and the Garden Writers Association of American (GWA). He confers internationally with horticultural researchers and conducts ongoing experiments of his own to improve gardening techniques, quality and yield.

Rosenthal views marijuana law as a crucial social issue. He serves as an expert witness on federal and state cultivation trials. He teaches classes at Oaksterdam University as well as cultivation seminars. Rosenthal is active promoting and developing civil regulation for marijuana.

After California passed Proposition 215 in 1996, legalizing marijuana for medical use, Rosenthal was deputized by the City of Oakland to cultivate marijuana for patients. In 2003, he was prosecuted by the federal government in a high-profile case. He was found guilty and sentenced to one day in jail with credit for time served.

Green Aid: The Medical Marijuana Legal Defense and Education Fund was formed to support Ed’s trial. Currently he serves as the Executive Director of Green Aid. Green Aid works to fund and publicize precedent-setting marijuana trials.

After almost four decades, his Ask Ed™ column continues to be the definitive source for marijuana questions and answers from readers around the world. His best-selling titles include Marijuana Grower’s Handbook, Medical Marijuana Handbook, Why Marijuana Should Be Legal, the Big Book of Buds Series, Marijuana Garden Saver, and Best of Ask Ed, among others. Rosenthal currently lives in Oakland, CA.
